Quando o imperador Ming (Max Von Sydow) está prestes a destruir o planeta terra e o fim está no próximo. Flash Gordon (J. Jones) é um jogador de futebol americano e juntamente uma jornalista Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) são forçados por um cientista Dr. Hans Zarkov (Chain Topol) a viajar ao planeta Mongo para tentar salvar a terra. Lá se valerá da bela e a misteriosa princesa Aura (Ornella Muti) e se juntará com Barin (Timothy Dalton) e outros príncipes subjugados para tentar enfrentar o tirano Ming.
