CBGB – O Berço do Punk Rock mostra a cena punk dinâmica de New York, através dos olhos do inovador club do Lower East Side, aberto pelo excêntrico Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), em 1973. Originalmente conhecido como a casa do “country, bluegrass e blues” (daí o nome do local), o club acabou se tornando o local onde o rock ‘n roll underground e o punk surgiram: quando Kristal teve dificuldades em contratar bandas de country, ele abriu suas portas para outro tipo de música.

Ele só tinha uma condição para as bandas que contratava: elas só poderiam tocar músicas originais. Sem topos das paradas, sem covers. Seu lema era apoiar artistas a qualquer custo. Hilly Kristal, ironicamente, se tornou conhecido como o padrinho do punk, dando uma chance para bandas como Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys e The Police.

Além desses, Patti Smith, Bad Brains, Green Day, Soul Asylum, Bruce Springsteen, Everclear, George Thorogood, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Black Crowes, The Flaming Lips, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The B-52s, The Runaways, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tool e The Wallflowers são só algumas das centenas de bandas que tocaram no clube durante os anos.

O clube fechou em 2006.
